Imgur is a very popular image-sharing site. It is one of the easiest ways to share photos online. It was created by Alan Schaaf in when he was a junior in college, and he "gifted" it to Reddit. It quickly became Reddit's go-to image-hosting site, and now has more than million users and billions of views per month. One of the strangest things around the celebrity hack scandal and Reddit's controversial role in it was that many people commenting on it wrote about it as if Reddit "hosted" the images.
Reddit doesn't host images; it only allows people to post text or links. So when people were posting stolen nude images of Jennifer LawrenceKate Upton and others, they were posting links to the fappenings pics reddit sites where those photos were hosted, and in many cases, that site was Imgur. Reddit, after hemming and hawing and allegedly making a good amount of money off the nude photo trafficeventually banned " The Fappening " forums that had popped up to share and discuss the nude pics.
Imgur, meanwhile, has not banned the Fappening on its site. Many nude photos stolen from celebrities' iCloud s are still posted around Imgur, including in an album called "It's Fappening" that was ed 2 weeks ago. While the photos are still available, the social features around those photos -- including comments and point ratings -- have been turned off.
For some reason, Imgur has managed to escape the scrutiny that Reddit has gotten even though it is the fappenings pics reddit site actually hosting the photos. When I asked Imgur about its policy when it comes to the photos, a spokesperson said that Imgur does not proactively screen photos ed to the platform for violating copyright or Imgur's terms of service, but it will immediately delete "content that violates our terms of service, including images that are stolen or used as harassment" when it's notified of their existence.
According to the spokesperson, Imgur added "extra resources" to its abuse and removal request teams after the celebrity hack. The spokesperson wouldn't specify the nature of the extra resources. We respect people's privacy, and we hope our users do too, but if you notice any stolen personal photos, please let us know by either ing abuse imgur.
We have added extra resources behind these two channels and will be acting diligently on anything that comes to our attention. I have to say I'm surprised that the celebs' diligent legal teams haven't already asked for these photos to be taken down. I'm also perplexed by the fact that social features have been removed from the photos but that the photos remain up. That makes it seem like the site has intervened in some way, if only to ensure that the photos don't appear in the "most popular" or "most commented on" modules around the site.
Perhaps because people see Reddit and Imgur as so interchangeable, they assumed that when The Fappening disappeared from Reddit, it disappeared from Imgur as well. A good thing about Imgur though is that it scrubs location metadata from ed photos by default, so the ones there don't reveal the longitude and latitude of the celebs at the time they snapped their pics.
I'm a privacy pragmatist, writing about the intersection of law, technology, social media and our personal information.
